Several months after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, we learned Pat Summitt, the winningest coach in NCAA basketball, would step down from her position as head coach of the Lady Vols basketball team. The announcement came about halfway through the day. I knew I needed to blow out my rundown and shape the entire newscast around this story. In the end, I produced a comprehensive newscast that captured Summitt's impact on women's basketball and the University of Tennessee community.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Isaac, I kept our coverage fresh and meaningful to viewers in East Tennessee. I began the show with one of our reporters live from Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. As a station, we partnered with the Red Cross to raise funds for storm victims. I showcased this effort by featuring one of our anchors live at the local Red Cross chapter. In addition to an A-Block segment, I built the D-Block around local storm relief efforts.

Knox County Commissioners ultimately decided whether to approve the budget. Budget stories can put the audience to sleep, but I found ways to keep viewers engaged by explaining what the vote meant for taxpayers and for local schools. I built informative graphics and worked with each of my reporters to establish team coverage of the vote.

A judge ordered retrials for four defendants in one of the biggest murder cases in Knox County. The decision came after a TBI Investigation into the judge who presided over the initial trials. He admitted to a painkiller addiction and was disbarred. My A-block was packed with the developments of the day, a closer look at the TBI file, and a live interview with a local attorney. Later in my newscast, I produced an interview segment with a local victims rights group leader and a local defense attorney.

For more than a week, a massive fire burned at a Knoxville mulch facility. It caused Code Red air quality alert days and even killed nearby wildlife. I updated my viewers on the efforts to extinguish the fire, and had one of my reporters focus on air quality. As a breakout to his story, I had our graphics department build an animation to explain the various types of air quality alert days.
